The fact-based shocker - shot in one continuous, riveting take – makes its U.S. debut on DVD on September 15, 2009, following a triumphant, award-winning tour of film festivals worldwide. There's no escape – for the victim or the viewer – in PVC-1, a remarkable thriller that sets a new course for suspense cinema. The Colombian drama, based on a true-crime story, makes its U.S. debut on DVD September 15, 2009, from IFC Films and MPI Home Video. The disc includes extensive bonus material and has an SRP of $24.98.
Alfred Hitchcock shot his 1948 classic "Rope" in a handful of continuous shots lasting one reel of film each; Mike Figgis' "Time Code" told several stories in real time on a screen divided in four quadrants; Aleksandr Sokurov's "Russian Ark" was a historical phantasmagoria filmed in one continuous take; and TV's hit "24" presents its storylines in something approaching real time – but never has the extremely difficult single-shot, no-cutting technique been put to such unbearably suspenseful use as it is in PVC-1.
In the 85-minute film, director Spiros Stathoulopoulos tells the story of a poor family in rural Colombia whose world is suddenly, horribly turned upside down. A group of masked men invade the family's home and lock PVC-1 tubing filled with explosives around the wife's neck. If they don't receive ransom money by their stated deadline, they will detonate the bomb. As events unfold in real time, Stathoulopoulos' GlideCam becomes the viewer's eyes, unable to look away as the clock ticks down and the victim's every frantic move becomes a matter of life and death. The largely nonprofessional cast adds to the film's authentic this-is-really-happening effect.
PVC-1 had its world premiere at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, where director Stathoulopoulos won the Award of the City of Rome. The film went on to win four prizes at the Thessaloniki Film Festival in Greece, including the prestigious FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics) Prize. It also won awards at the Sofia and Bangkok film festivals.
