Positive Word of Mouth Drives Momentum in Experiencing Super 8 in IMAX; Number of Expected International IMAX Screens Rises to More Than 90 From 39. IMAX Corporation and Paramount Pictures announced today Super 8, from writer/director J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg, posted a strong opening weekend result in IMAX theatres, generating $4.1 million from 239 IMAX screens. The overall box office gross for the weekend was $35.4 million, with a total gross domestic box office of $36.4 million to date.
Internationally, the movie earned $6.7 million from 9 international markets in its opening frame, with the 12 IMAX screens grossing $200,000. The film is set to run on approximately 90 IMAX screens overseas by the end of summer -- up from the 39 international screens initially anticipated
"Once again, these results reflect the fact that The IMAX Experience(R) can make a great film even more enjoyable for audiences," said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. "We're encouraged by the 24 percent increase in our box office from Friday to Saturday, which suggests the impact of positive word of mouth surrounding the IMAX release is building."

In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town set out to make a zombie movie. While shooting their Super 8 film, they witness a catastrophic train crash and, after barely escaping themselves, they soon discover that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town and local Deputy Jack Lamb (Kyle Chandler) tries to uncover the truth -- something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

Super 8 has been rated PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi action and violence, language and some drug use.
