Ben Cross (Dark Shadows) portrays Captain Nemo in this made-for-television adaptation of the Jules Verne novel. It concentrates primarily on Captain Nemo's infatuation with one of the female prisoners he's taken on board his sub. He's never come across a woman like her and wants to make her his queen. His plan is to make the waters between the U.S and Europe impassable so that the world powers will grant him back his kingdom, which was stolen from him years ago. Some of the underwater scenes are old-fashioned looking, with the blue screen effect. Still, there are some cool sequences, such as when they travel over the remains of Atlantis and when they encounter a huge creature called a Proto-leviathan, which almost swallows the Nautilis. There's no giant squids in this movie. The story also ends on an open-note, which seems to suggest that this was intended as a pilot for a tv series. The Walt Disney version of 20,000 Leagues still remains the best.
