This was made a few years before the higher-budgeted GALAXY QUEST and deals with the same premise of a superhero actor having to prove he's the real thing. On the planet Pangea, which looks like the set of a cheap sci-fi movie, rebels try to fight the better equipped Vectrons but are easily chased away. One boy, whose father was killed in battle, creates a teleportation device and transports a 1950's actor back to his planet. The boy and his trusty robot had seen him on a television broadcast, on a Buck Roger's like TV show called CAPTAIN ZOOM.Well, this actor is nothing like the legend he portrays, constantly trying to run away from danger. He's quickly captured by the evil leader (Ron Perlman) and escapes after de-flowering the virginal but horny high priestess. This actor, as the movie progresses, becomes more and more like the character he had portrayed. Not only do these rebels believe in him, he believes in himself, not a façade to hide behind. While not as entertaining as GALAXY QUEST, which was basically a STAR TREK movie, CAPTAIN ZOOM does have its moments-and is a good homage to the original FLASH GORDON serials.Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) has a small part as the priestess of the rebels.
