Dr. Lee Rosen (David Straitharn of BROTHER FROM ANOTHER PLANET) leads a team of special humans called "Alphas", who have extraordinary abilities. After an important court witness is shotin a locked, windowless room, he and his team are put on the case. There's Gary Bell, who can see all electrical signals and manipulate them. He's also autistic. There's the former FBI agent, Bill Harken, who can get incredible strength. And there's Nina Theroux, who can influence people's minds and get them to do whatever she wants, and Rachel Pirzad, who can magnify her senses. Their investigation leads them to Cameron Hicks, who has uncanny balance and aim. He's the one who shot that witness. But his mind was being controlled by an evil Alpha who can control people like puppets. At the end of this first episode Hicks becomes their newest member, though he's pretty much blackmailed into doing so by Rosen.
In the next episode they are after an unstable Alpha, with the ability to see connections between everything, who has escaped from a government facility where dangerous Alphas are kept and studied. He blames Rosen for the hell he's gone through the past six years and wants him to understand what's going on--that the government wants to take away their powers. That's where he was doing when he escaped--they were taking him to a hospital to have part of his brain removed. So Dr. Rosen's group may really be on their own since he's horrified by this fact.
ALPHAS is basically a cross between MUTANT X and HEROES. This new Syfy show has my interest so far and I'm curious where it will go.
