Captain Dylan Hunt and the crew of the Andromeda find themselves on a planet called Seefra, which is this post-apocalyptic looking place inhabited by grungy looking humans. During the first few episodes he finds the members of his crew and discovers they've each been there for a different amount of time. Becka Valentine has been there for six months, Rode a year and a half and Seamus Harper a whopping three years. And Trance not only has a new appearance but has lost all her memories. A new character, Doyle, is introduced, another android built by Harper. Because he was unable to restore the Andromeda avatar he built Doyle, who houses Andromeda's core personality. She's blonde and totally different in appearance than her predecessor.
Many of the episodes deal with them simply surviving on the planet, which is actually one of nine identical planets, Seefra 1-9. The spaceship is dead in space, out of power, and they spend a lot of time trying to find a new power source. They need the ship to go to slipstream, which is the only way to get out of this "pocket universe" they've found themselves in. Because of budgetary reasons, I'm sure, there are a lot of episodes that take place in and around the local bar that Harper runs and there are lots of "flashback" heavy episodes.
It's not until the end of the seasons, when the sun starts engulfing the planets, that they are on a mission to save anyone.
They end up getting out of Seefra system and find that they've only been gone four days since the end of the last season, not years, so it's almost like the season didn't even happen. The Neitzeans are still attacking the Commonwealth and the Andromeda gets caught in the middle of a war and the enemy is still "The Abyss".
The series does end with the last episode but it seems too rushed and open-ended.
