This new "adaptation" of the Michael Crichton novel (1972) simply uses the novel's plot points as an outline and goes off in an entirely different direction with both the characters and story. An ethnically diverse group of scientists are secluded in a secret underground label figuring out how to stop the strange Andromeda Virus from killing everyone. The disease, which came down from space in a crashed satellite, has an almost 100% fatality rate, in a matter of minutes. The only survivors from the first infected town are a drunk and a newborn baby and the scientists must figure out the connection between the two.
The subplot with the news reporter Jack Nash (Eric McCormack ) is unnecessary and such a cliche its funny at times. I suspect its addition was to stretch the movie to a two-parter. The pseudo-romance between the two head doctors is also trite.
The biggest difference between this mini-series and the original 1971 movie and the book is the ending, in which they find out the where and why the deadly virus comes from. It's far more similar to an extended episode of THE 4400 than it is an adaptation of the Michael Crichton novel.
