This is one of director/writer Brett Piper's best, about a group of people terrorized by giant spider creatures in the woods. A plane of paleontology students (most of the cast of PSYCLOPS) and their professor crashes in the wilds after passing through a meteor shower. They all survive and stumble across an old cabin, where they run into the craggly old owner. When he learns that they're paleontologists he's quick to show them something strange-the corpse of a gigantic eight-foot long spider. Of course the professor thinks it's hoax-but when the giant spiders start coming around looking for food he quickly changes his mind. It seems that the meteor shower made an opening in the earth for the subterranean creatures to emerge. And they have to battle them until help comes. Rather than using computer animation Piper has wisely chosen to bring the spiders to life through stop-motion-animation and miniatures, which gives you the feel of watching an old 50's or 60's giant bug movie, exactly what he intends. As for characters, there's the reluctant hero, the tough love interest, the irritating teacher who deserves what happens to him, the goofball, and the bimbos (who have the obligatory lesbian scene). This is a fun movie that multi-million dollar EIGHT-LEGGED FREAKS should have been.
