In this Brian Yuzna co-produced giant bug movie there are some decent effects and interesting characters but the movie is very sloppily written. A navy pilot crashes on a South Pacific island after literally running in to a UFO--and eight months later his sister, a private commercial pilot, goes in search of him. She agrees to transport a group of mercenaries and scientists, who are in search of the source of a strange new virus some native picked up, and they happen to be going to that same island. Whew. You would think that if they are trying to locate a deadly virus they'd have some type of protection. Anyway, as their plane nears the island the engine mysteriously stops and they crash land on the beach. Almost immediately they start encountering these weird mutated insects--and one by one members are the group are killed. The most interesting characters are MERCER, the woman pilot (Alex Reid) and the native Polynesian characters, who end up killing the giant spider with a dart gun when machine guns don't work!It's never explained where the giant bugs are coming from but it's assumed (like a lot of other things in this movie) that it has something to do with the crashed alien ship. Also, the movie ends arbitrarily, completely open ended. Hopefully they will not make a sequel.
