Solar storms have desolated the planet, killing off 95% of mankind, who now live in protected cities. Robots were created to help do many of the menial tasks people use to do. And, of course, there's a law that robots cannot modify themselves. Jacq (Antonio Banderas) is an insurance agent who investigates such cases--and becomes emotionally involved when he begins to connect with one of the artificial beings. He learns that they've progressed far beyond mankind and simply want to be left alone to evolve. Of course, he's pretty much forced to go along because he's kidnapped by several of them making their way out into the desert.
This movie was a surprise to me since I had never heard anything about it prior to watching it. It's a bit HARDWARE crossed with CIRCUITRY MAN melded with I ROBOT and THE ROAD WARRIOR. Highly recommended, especially if you enjoyed the movie THE MACHINE.
