This takes place months after the BABYLON 5 pilot and several characters are replaced with new ones. New on board are Dr. Stephen Franklin (Richard Biggs), Commander Susan Ivanova (Claudia Christian) replacing Tamlyn Tomita's Commander and psychic Talia Winters (Andrea Thompson) replacing Lyta Alexander. Commander Jeffrey Sinclair is still in charge of this massive space station, which is located in neutral territory and is used primarily for diplomatic purposes. In the first episode the Narn attack a Centauri colony and so begins the ongoing fued/friendship between Centauri Londo Malari and the Narn ambassador G'Kar (Andreas Katsulas) which continues throughout the next five years.
In one episode Sinclair is visited by an old girlfriend, Catherine Sakai, which makes him seem a bit more human as he's kind of standoffish. A lot of this has to do with him not being able to remember what happened to him during the end of the Earth/Minbari War. Delenn (Mira Furlann of LOST), the Minbari Ambassador on the station knows what happened to him but she's not revealing that, yet. Talia Winter is having issues with the PsiCorp, which has controlled her life, especially when she's asked to hunt down one of her old instructors who she used to have a relationship with. The by-the-book Ivanova has to deal with the death of her father and the mysterious Ambassador Kosh may be up to a string of attacks on the station. One of the more interesting episodes is BABYLON SQUARED, in which the previous Babylon Station 4 reappears after mysteriously vanishing five years before. There's a bit of time travel involved and we see an older version of Sinclair. In fact, this older version saves Security Office Garibaldi's life. This episode ties directly into another later in the series.
The cool thing about this show is that each episode builds upon the other and there are really no "standalone" shows. It also introduces well defined characters and unique aliens species such as the Minbari. The season ends with a series of cliffhangers, with Girabaldi (Jerry Doyle) in a coma, Delenn in a weird cocoon and the president of Earth dying in an explosion when his ship is destroyed.
