This independent movie from Wisconsin is a well-written, highly entertaining blend of two horror subgenres--the "Slasher movie" and the "Bigfoot movie". Yes, you heard right. And it combines them extremely well. Like JEEPERS CREEPERS, it has this non-human, man-eating monster, that has managed to change its form over the years. It's called The Black Hodag.
After they attend a friend's funeral a group of six friends decide to rent a secluded cabin together and catch up on old times. However, one of them is the high school "jock", who tormented the high school "nerd"--and the nerd is also there. They are also both interested in the same girl. While the majority of the story is about these friends and them getting killed off, there is also some of the local population that is ripped to shreds.
The effects are suitably gooey and over the top (lots of raw meat there) and not too much is shown of The Black Hodag, which keeps it interesting. And while I did see "The Twist" coming, it's done well.
If you're sick of lame Hollywood remakes of horror movies then you should definitely check out this well-written independent monster flick. It is much more entertaining than the "Blockbusters".
