A six-year-old African-American girl, Hushpuppy, living with her schizophrenic alcoholic father in the bayou near New Orleans, must deal with his fading health. When the area floods they, and a few others who stayed behind, band together, though the authorities come and take them to a "safe" area, that's the complete opposite of the natural world in which they live. Hushpuppy has daydreams about the "Aurochs", these prehistoric beasts from a story she heard, and how they've broken loose from the ice caps. They look like a cross between a shaggy cow and a wild boar. Basically, they represent her fear and uncertainty of her changing situation. This is an interesting movie. It has the feeling of "Tom Sawyer", with a kid going on an adventure by herself.
