Alex Mathis (Greg Grunberg of HEROES) is a pest controller who loves his job. After he gets bitten by a brown recluse spider and goes to the hospital he gets involved with finding a much larger spider that had been transported with a corpse. It bites the medical examiner (Ruben Pla) who insists the arachnid is gigantic. No one believes him except for Alex. This particular spider is a genetic creation of the Army's, mostly from alien DNA from Mars. With each person it attacks it grows larger--and soon it's as big as a truck. The army, led by Major Braxton Tanner (Ray Rise) wants to recapture it and views Alex as a pest. And Alex falls for Lieutenant Karly Brant (Clare Kramer), who at one point is captured by the spider, wrapped up in a cocoon and taken to its nest in a tall building. And there are cameos by Lloyd Kaufman, Kevin Tenney and Kerry O'Quinn (creator of Starlog, Fangoria) and there's a small part by Lin Shaye (INSIDIOUS)
With a title like this you are telegraphed what to expect, so it's no surprise that this is indeed a goofy giant bug movie. In fact, it's a great goofy giant bug movie. It's a thousand time better than any giant animal movie on the Syfy Channel.
