This is a surprisingly moving, very low-key Tim Burton movie with an excellent cast. A man (Billy Crudup) is at odds with his father (Albert Finney), who has told these fantastical stories to him all his life. He wants to know the 'real' stories, not made up ones. After three years of not speaking with him he gets a call from his mother saying that the old man is dying-so he returns home in hopes of getting some closure. The father re-tells him some of the stories, which involve giants, a giant catfish, a secret war mission and Siamese twins. The audience is led to suspect that some of these incredible stories might be true-but how many of them are?Of course, we don't find out until the ending, which also turns out to be a real tearjerker. When I saw this in the theatre 95% of the audience stayed through the end credits, all sniffly and teary-eyed. At the same time, it's a feel good movie, so go figure.
