Anna (Nicole Kidman), still grieving ten years after the death of her husband, Sean, announces that she's going to get remarried. Soon after, during the birthday celebration of her elderly mother (Lauren Bacall), a ten-year-old boy shows up at the apartment and claims to be Sean. Of course, at first Anna thinks the kid is nuts-but with his continued persistence and knowledge he possesses, she becomes convinced that this is the reincarnation of her dead husband. This extremely irritates her fiance, who moves out of her apartment. Anna, then, begins to develop the idea that she should run away with this child and wait until he's old enough to get married to her. There's two really uncomfortable scenes involving the two in a bathroom and again in a bed.BIRTH isn't a horror film, as nothing horrific happens, nor is it a thriller, as nothing remotely thrilling happens either. So much could have been done with the premise, yet it's done in such an unfocused, meandering way that you're kind of just left saying 'huh?' when the movie ends. BIRTH is a stillborn.
