This is one of those rare remakes that's superior to the original and I'd rank it alongside the recent remakes of THE AMITYVILLE HORROR and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE in terms of creating something new from the source material.
The premise is that an insane yellow-skinned (he has a rare liver disease) killer escapes from the asylum after fifteen years and goes back to the house he was practically held captive in most of his life. Through flashbacks we see how the serial killer was created, from his Joan Crawford looking mother locking him in the attic and her mental and physical/sexual abuse of him.
Unfortunately for a group of sorority sisters they are now living in that same house-and the girls start being knocked off one by one. Although I've seen this scenario a zillion times I still found the movie interesting and suspenseful. Director Glenn Morgan (X-FILES) also brings in two actresses from his FINAL DESTINATION movies.
If you enjoyed that brutal trilogy you will dig this throwback.
