A group of college-aged friends are partying at night on a secluded California beach. One of them finds a big gourd looking object. The next morning they wake up in various forms of hangover, in their cars and a lifeguard shack. Everyone else seems to have deserted them. However, when one of them gets out to walk on the sand something begins to pull him down. He starts screaming and it looks as if the sand is actually eating him. What it is, though, is some form of creature that's just beneath the sand. So, they are all trapped. Some try to escape and don't make it. One of them, a big African American guy, is stuck in a metal drum canister-and you know that he's going to be food by the end of the movie. Jamie Kennedy has a cameo as a Beach Patrolman who doesn't believe them at first-and is promptly devoured. As the film progresses the creature gets large, from hair-like strands to giant octopus-like arms.
