While not exactly boring, this post-apocalyptic movie starring Denzel Washington is a slow-moving examination of a very determined survivor on a mission. It's been 31 years since "The Burn", when the last World War ripped holes in the ozone layer and the majority of the earth fried. Now, bands of humans survive in the barren wasteland and water is one of the most precious commodities.
We first see Eli (Washington) walking across this barren landscape, then killing a group of marauders. Then he comes across a town run by Carnegie (Gary Oldman). Carnegie witnesses how well Eli can fight and wants him to stay in town but Eli declines the invitation. When Carnegie finds out that Eli possesses a copy of the bible, he wants it at all costs. All bibles were destroyed after the last war and he believes it can be used as a weapon, to control people. But by then Eli has escaped his prison and there's an Old West style shoot-out in the streets during which Carnegie is shot in the leg. Eli resumes his walk to the West and is accompanied by Solara (Mila Kunis), a young woman who wants to escape that community. There's the obligatory chase by Carnegie's men, lots of explosions and more killings. And a "twist" ending that isn't so big of a twist.
While the whole bible quoting aspect wasn't too annoying I'm sure this will really appeal to all those Christians out there, giving them a warm fuzzy feeling that the bible survives the apocalypse. But I'd take AFTER THE FALL OF NEW YORK or MAD MAX over this movie any day.
