Brimstone (1989)
Movie Review by The Gravedigger

Brimstone (1989) The premise of this is that after fifteen years in hell, a policeman named Ezekial Stone (Peter Horton) is allowed to return to Earth to do the Devil's bidding-- to recapture over a hundred evil souls who had escaped. The reason he went to hell is that he hunted down and killed the man who raped his wife.

Of course, most of these bad guys brought back some type of supernatural power with them, whether spreading a plague or channeling electricity. The only way to kill them is to poke their eyes out, whether shooting them with a bullet or some sharp object. Stone begrudgingly does his job and the devil (John Glover) is on-hand to make his "life" more difficult. One of the best episodes is ASHES, in which he discovers that detective Ash (Teri Polo), who he's had an attraction to for half a dozen episodes, turns out to be someone entirely different. In HELLUVA LIFE, a sort of CHRISTMAS CAROL story, an angel appears and shows Stone that he's doing good, while the devil says it's inevitable that he'd be going to hell, regardless that he killed someone. In this episode he also finds out what happened to his wife and must try to stop her from being killed in a bank robbery.

One thing I thought was kind of stupid is that these escapees from Hell all go right back to where they left off....if they were a bank robber they'd rob a bank, a rapist, they'd rape, et cetera. I don't know about you, but If I just escaped from Hell, especially after being there for hundreds or thousands of years, I'd keep a low profile and not go back to my mother's house.

My favorite thing about the series is that the Devil does this minor nuisances, such as loosening the top on a salt shaker, tying a sleeping homeless man's shoes together, ripping out the last few pages of a novel. Also, Stone wakes up each morning with the same exact amount of money he had in his wallet, $36.27, something he quickly gets tired of. The new show, REAPER, has the same premise and is a lot better.
