David Cronenberg made an interesting movie here folks! The whole storyline is strange and is moved along by some creepy, brutal action that really kicks ass! A woman undergoing a mysterious psychotherapy from a weird doctor, played by Oliver Reed, is a very unique individual indeed. See, she can manifest her deep-seated angers and fears in the form of children. She actually gives birth to strange, freakish mutant kids that take the physical form of her rage. These 'children', The Brood, attack whomever she is currently pissed at in violent, deadly ways. They seem to particularly enjoy using hammers or mallets to bash down victims. That's the short version of the film, there's much more to The Brood than that, well... sort of. The husband slowly figures all this stuff out, gets to meet one of the brood himself, and witnesses the aftermath of most of the killings. The cool thing about this movie is the way the roles end up being reversed by the end. The person you feel has been a victim throughout actually is the cause and the assumed villain really wants to help. The real payoff is watching sexy Samantha Eggar bite into the birth sack of one of her new 'children' and start to lick off the afterbirth! Talk about mid-wife duties, yuck! You'll never forget that scene. I felt sorry for the real daughter here as she gets both abused and kidnapped by her murderous 'siblings', poor kid. No wonder by the closing shot, she's building a little rage of her own. This movie is class from start to finish and must-see-TV, just one more reason why David Cronenberg's work is so highly regarded. You'll never look at toddlers the same once you've met The Brood.
