Based on the Fritz Leiber novel, CONJURE WIFE, with a screenplay by Richard Matheson and Charles Beaumont (two of the best writers on the original TWILIGHT ZONE), this is about a college professor who uncovers the fact that his wife is a witch. His whole career is based on debunking superstition and this revelation comes as quite a surprise. He finds magical paraphernalia hidden about his house-and when he confronts her with the mound of trinkets she explains that it's all to protect him-and that there are evil forces out to get him. The next day his world starts to collapse-a female student accuses him of raping her, her jealous boyfriend pulls a gun on him and he's viewed disfavorably by the other faculty. SomeTHING is truly out to get him. His wife panics and casts a spell of trading her life for his-but he realizes what she's up to and stops her in time. In a very creepy sequence the stone eagle overhanging a building entrance comes to life and chases him. BURN, WITCH, BURN has the same feeling as CURSE OF THE DEMON, conveying a sense of paranoia of evil forces out to do harm. IT's also one of the best witchcraft themed movies ever made.
