In 1879 in the Old West a family of setters disappears under mysterious circumstances. It looks as if they were attacked but there are no bodies. Of course the community thinks it's Indians, so a group if formed to hunt them down. This party consists of Indian fighters Will Parcher and John Clay, a ranch hand who was engaged to a girl from that family and a teenager who wants to prove himself to his father. On the way they pick up a few more members, including a thief and an ex-slave.
Out on the prairie they discover that it's not Indians--or anything human at all that has been taking people. It's these creature that live underground that feed on human flesh. They inject a paralyzing toxin into the person and then bury them, to come back later and finish them off.
These monsters are realized quite well and at times I felt I was watching some bizarre animal on the Discovery Channel. This is up there with THE DESCENT, for weird, believable horror. This is up there with DEAD BIRDS as a horror Western.
