Christopher Atkins (THE BLUE LAGOON)is an American hired by a group of criminals in Switzerland (led by Colm Meany of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION) to explore an abandoned salt mine that caved in fifty years ago. At the start of the film we're shown that the miners broke into a cavern filled with giant emeralds-and unleashed these giant carnivorous beetles. Dynamite explodes and the mine is sealed off.I think this movie is trying to capitalize on the much higher budgeted THE CAVE, but has none of that movie's excitement whatsoever. Everything is here is predictable and silly, including the ending where they destroy the giant queen beetle (why is there always a queen insect?). My biggest question is what have these creatures been living upon while underground? We don't see any other animals-and these things are huge. Dumb.
