A group of amateur cave explorers go to Russia to explore an unknown cave system. This is a dry cave for the most part, lots of dust, can really just see what's within the lamplight of the explorers. To make up for the lack of scenery there's lots of POV shots of people running and screaming, a la BLAIR WITCH. The leader of the group is an African-American who lost his fiance the year before. She had drowned when the cave they were exploring in Peru flooded-and there are several flashbacks to this. There's also a nerdy guy writing a book about cave exploring and he fits that stereotype to a tee. The creature attacks are mysterious and harrowing-and the movie does keep you guessing until the end exactly what the monster is.
THE CAVERN is not as good as THE CAVE or THE DESCENT, yet it's a decent enough horror movie about a subterranean monster
