The City of Ember, which is built in a massive cave deep beneath the Earth's surface, is beginning to lose power. Each blackout is longer than the last, which is a huge problem since no one knows how to fix it. This is because the city's "Builders" only intended for them to be down there two hundred years, as outlined in a manual that was passed down from city mayor to city mayor. However, this book was lost generations ago--until it's found by two teenagers. They want to find a way out of the city but it's against the law--and soon they become fugitives as they try to figure out the secret of how to leave. The mayor (Bill Murray) is only concerned with stuffing his own face with the cache of hidden food he's found, rather than saving his people.
This is a cool movie, with excellent production design. I love those scenes with the giant mole that prowls the pipeworks. Moles are freaky, especially fifteen foot ones!
