This is the best disaster movie to come out in a long time, reminding me of those Irwin Allen epics from the 70's. And the effects are great. The premise is that the Earth's core has stopped spinning, which is causing the planet's electromagnetic energy to disperse, in turn creating huge lightning storms and deadly holes in the atmosphere. The scientists know that all life will be destroyed within the next year. So they build a drilling vehicle that is able to travel to the Earth's core, where the crew will drop off a series of nuclear bombs to make the core spin again. The ship is able to withstand the incredible temperatures because of a newly created metal compound, dubbed 'unobtainium'. The crew itself consists of two shuttle pilots and four scientists. They encounter some odd things along the way and characters are killed off in horrible ways. I wasn't sure who was going to survive to the end. Check it out.
