A scientist, Dr. Steven Sorenson (Dana Andrews), who is gung-ho about geothermal energy, plans to tap into the Earth's molten core. But in order to do this he has to explode a nuclear missile in order to poke a hole into the mantle. He thinks this can be controlled but another scientist, Dr. Ted Rampion, fears that it will crack the Earth like an egg. Rampion used to date Sorenson's wife, Dr. Maggie Sorenson, so there is some history between them. She assures her husband that there's no longer anything between them and even wants to have his child. But he knows he can't--he's been exposed to too much radiation from the Earth and so the kid would be damaged. And the doctor at the facility tells him that he only has a short time to live. So instead of confiding all this in his young wife he becomes an asshole and pushes her away--into the arms of Ted. At first the experiment seems like a success but then there are earthquakes, volcanoes exploding and massive loss of life. The earth is indeed cracking and it's a race against time to explode another bomb to stop it before it splits the planet in half.
This is as exciting as any Irwin Allen disaster movie and the sets and special effects are impressive, especially for the time period in which it was made. Highly recommended.
