Wanna see a great film from a Lovecraft short story? Dagon has risen! I loved this film in spite of some of the hard to understand, mush-mouthed dialog courtesy of some of the Spanish folks. A few silly moments aside, this film does a Lovecraft tale justice unlike some of the other piss poor films we've seen try before. Lovecraft's shit just don't translate well to film, that's a fact, but Stuart Gordon reaches for the stars here. The results made me happy, not sure how you'll feel. Dagon has gore, the skinning scene particularly nasty, nudity, and some great FX, both digital and standard. I felt for our hero, who meets the girl of his dreams (literally), gets a kiss, sees a nice pair, and then pulls down her bed sheets only to reveal a pair of tentacles in place of legs. Damn, son, that had to hurt. She was hot though, but I just can't do tentacles. How about you? Dagon offers enough to keep Lovecraft freaks and us horror geeks happy. The way the villagers are presented in various stages of change did give me the feel I'd hoped for. The location helped also. A few sets of Spanish tits didn't make me cry neither. And can you believe this movie had a decent ending? The pluses far outweigh the minuses here, so check it out, a feel good film for sea creatures and ancient ones everywhere!
