This American adaptation of the Asian film is not quite as creepy as the Asian version, although it is a much better movie. It's primarily a character study of a depressed young mother (Jennifer Connelly of A BEAUTIFUL MIND, HULK, CREEPERS), separated from her cheating husband, who moves into a dingy old apartment building on New York City's Roosevelt Island (a small island in the East River, between NYC and Queens). The only person she has-and the only one she cares about-is her young daughter. The daughter finds a Hello Kitty backpack up on the roof and soon after develops an invisible friend named Natasha. But Natasha is a ghost-and it's unclear if her intentions are for good or for evil. If you didn't care for the original version you will enjoy this remake.
