I have fond memories of this anthology show, hosted by James Coburn, but the show doesn't quite hold up on viewing 27 years later....
This series started off like the series MONSTERS, only with a budget, then becomes Roald Dahl's TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED. The episodes are too different from each other, though half of them are decent, as good as any TWILIGHT ZONE or NIGHT GALLERY episodes. Having Coburn host the show and introduce the stories is hokey and entirely unnecessary and forced.
THE BOGEYMAN WILL GET YOU, based on a Robert Bloch short story, features Helen Hunt as a young woman who falls for an older drifter. Her sister suspects that he's a vampire, as he only comes out at night, but he turns out to be something entirely different.
CLOSED CIRCUIT, written by Allan Brennart (80's TWILIGHT ZONE episodes) is a chilling story about a news anchor who is coerced to retire because a new technology has made him obsolete. It features Richard Anderson (Oscar Goldman from SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN) as his boss.
SIEGE OF 31 AUGUST is almost exactly like that episode with the toy soldiers from NIGHTMARES & DREAMSCAPES (made 25 years later). MAKE-UP features Billy Crystal as a loser who purchases a make-up case belonging to an old Hollywood actor and it allows him to change his appearance for real, which comes in handy when there's guys out to kill him. THE PARTNERSHIP, about what happens to strangers when they come through a small town and are talked into visiting the old funhouse by a seemingly harmless old man. He feeds them to a creature that lives in the lake below the old structure.
