A television producer, Francine (Gaylen Ross) is working at a Philadelphia tv station which is reporting about the zombie epidemic. She's waiting for her boyfriend, Stephen (David Emge) who flies the traffic helicopter. Then we go to a group of SWAT team members who are clearing out a barricaded building. The residents had been protecting their reanimated dead so that when they break in there's a flood of the zombies. It's here Roger and Peter (Ken Foree) meet up. Roger is supposed to rendezvous with Francine and Stephen and brings Peter along, though it will affect their gas. They leave just in time. However, they can't get far and have to refuel. Here they encounter some kid zombies, the poster child for the movie, and another who gets decapitated by the helicopter blades. Soon after they find a mall and take refuge. They soon get to thinking that they can close off the exits, pick off the zombies and have the entire place to themselves. That is, until a huge biker gang comes along and undoes all their hard work.
For the most part the special effects hold up, though in a few instances I can now see it's effects man Tom Savini doing stunts for a few of the zombies, such as in the truck scene. And the blue/green makeup for the zombies is old hat. However, I never get tired of this classic zombie movie, especially if I'm re-watching it with someone who has never seen it before.
