It is 2019, ten years since nearly everyone had transformed into vampires because of a plague spread by bats. These are your Classic vampires--they can't go out in the sunlight, they cast no reflection and their hearts don't beat. Now, only %5 of humans remain and there's a huge blood supply shortage for the vamps. If they do not get blood they start regressing into these animalistic, bat-like creatures with no reasoning ability.
The story centers around Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke), a reluctant vampire who is the head hematologist for a huge corporation run by Charles Bromley (Sam Neill). He's working on a blood substitute so humans will no longer be used as cattle. In fact, he's stopped drinking human blood and he's started to get the pointed ears. His "life" changes when he accidently runs a car filled with humans off the road. He helps them get away from the police and is later recruited for their cause. They believe they have found a cure for vampirism, which is exactly in the most unexpected way. Willem Dafoe is great as one of the human resistance fighters.
There is plenty of violence and gore and I particularly liked the regressed vampires, the "sub-dwellers". This isn't your "TWILIGHT" type vampire. In fact,
DAYBREAKERS is one of the best vampire movies I've seen in years, a far better version of I AM LEGEND than that lame Will Smith movie from a few years ago.
