Just when I thought the serial killer movie has been done to death along comes Ron Ford's new movie, a cool twist on the genre. Jenny Barrett (Trish Haight in a superior performance), a slightly eccentric woman running away from an abusive husband, hitchhikes to the home of her idol, true-crime novelist Lucas Swan (Randal Malone). At first Swan thinks she's just another crazy fan who wants his autograph-but is more friendly to her when he finds out she's a longtime email buddy. Since she has no place to stay he offers her a room in his Bed & Breakfast establishment. It's the off season, or 'Dead Season', so there isn't anybody else in the place. That is, until a visitor from Swan's past checks in-the very same serial killer who he had based his best-selling novel on. We're not sure what the killer wants at first-and both Swan and Jenny are on edge until they decide to play a more active role and take matters into their own hands.Murders are happening again in the town and the police believe it's Swan's gardener, a mentally retarded man (Ron Ford). They arrest this guy and then take him down to the police station's basement, where a guy (Joe Estevez) with a baseball bat awaits him. This is the father of one of the victims who wants to get his vengeance. He starts beating the man but the gardener manages to take the baseball bat-and then beats the man to death. He escapes back to Swan's, having no place else to go. Then, the police arrive...DEAD SEASON boasts great performances by leads Randal Malone (SWAN) and Trish Haight (Jenny Barrett), plenty of cameos by genre-related actors and the best scene I've ever seen Joe Estevez in. It's also unpredictable and has a surprising twist ending.
