It's much better than season four but they kill off the sheriff Bannerman (Chris Bruno), one of the best characters of the series. In his place comes an out-of-town female sheriff with a grudge and a lot of the episodes revolve around her, which is kind of a waste of time since the producers are supposed to be wrapping up the various strings of the series...which they don't do.
Now that the way is clearly for Johnny Smith to pursue a relationship with Sara (Nicole DeBoer) is does't work out as planned and she starts dating Smith's nemesis, Greg Stillson, who becomes Vice-President of the United States. Sheriff Bannerman is under suspicion for being corrupt, so there's that whole needless subplot, which haphazardly ties in with Stillson and his gang. Johnny's son turns out to be psychic, which throws a curve ball, as Johnny got his abilities from being in a coma--he wasn't born with them (and his child was conceived BEFORE he was in his coma).
Tom Skerritt has a cameo as Johnny's long-thought-dead father, in a revelation that doesn't make a lot of sense or is at all necessary. Skerritt, by the way, portrayed sheriff Bannerman in the original 1983 movie with Christopher Walken.
The feeling I have is that the producers thought they had one more year--and at episode nine (of twelve) figured they had to have some sort of resolution to things. I was hoping that the last episode, DENOUEMENT, would finally have the fatal confrontation between Smith and Stillson, so that Johnny saves the world from nuclear war--but the series is left on an open note, with Johnny, Sara and their son looking off into the horizon. Perhaps looking for that ending.
