The synopsis on the box and the artwork made this a promising end-of-the-world type movie. But once the movie started and there was ten minutes of scrolling explanation and voice-over, telling that Armageddon is at hand and that Satan has declared war on mankind, I started to think 'Oh no'.The battle ends up being between a group of people who accidently open the sealed gateway to hell and the demons (Fallen Angels) that come forth. This includes an old archeologist and his daughter and a bunch of military types who are way overdosed on testosterone. The angel Uriel shows up, looking very much like a young Lou Ferrigno (and about the same acting ability), and explains to the humans what they have to do to survive. The computer effects are cheesy but the monster suits are fun and nasty looking. What ruins it is when the demons talk-the dialogue is inane and sounds as if it was dubbed in.The script is far too ambitious for its budget and the acting, for the most part, simply awful. The lead soldier (Rick Benedetto) is a Mickey Rourke wannabee, though Mickey Rourke's acting is Lawrence Olivier compared to this guy. Leslie Brockett, as the female archeologist, manages to pull off her role-and I wished that more of the story centered around her. The movie degenerates into a messy ending where Satan turns out to be this little bubble-eyed dog and the soldier tries to take over the devil's rule in hell. I suppose all this is supposed to be funny yet all I felt was dumbfounded. Available from Maverick Entertainment (www.maverickentertainment.cc)
