This begins exactly where the first one ended, with survivor Sarah Carter (Shauna MacDonald). The authorities have been looking for the 5 missing women for two days and Sarah is found wandering the roads, far from where the search is going. She's taken to the nearby hospital but doesn't remember anything. The past two days are a blank to her. However, the sheriff thinks she has something to do with her friends' disappearances and suspects she may have killed them since she was found covered in human blood. So the sheriff takes Sarah, along with a search party, to an old mine that taps into the cave system below. The old lift still works, so they take that down to the lowest section of the mine, then find the cave entrance-- and a dead human body. This is when the fun begins.
There's a cave-in and the group is separated while the underground dwellers make their appearance. Sarah goes off on her own, though she ends up protecting the female deputy, who she can relate with. There's lot of claustrophobic scenes, lots of gushing blood and lot of grossness. Basically, everything that's in the first movie is in this one too, maybe a bit more so. Plus, there's a good surprise I wasn't expecting.
THE DESCENT part 2 is a decent sequel and it's interesting seeing a completely different group of characters in this situation, being stalked by these blind monsters. I also like the explanation why these creatures haven't been discovered before, since they hunt the majority of their food above ground. It reminds me of author Richard Laymon's BEAST HOUSE series. This could definitely be the beginning of an intriguing franchise.
