In the first episode serial killer Dexter (Michael C. Hall) accidently murders the youngest brother of a prosecuting attorney, Miguel Prado (Jimmy Smits) when he's out trying to capture his next victim, a drug dealer. When the police are called in about that homicide, Dexter returns and makes sure he didn't leave anything behind to implicate himself. However, he then meets Miguel, who takes a liking to Dexter and wants to be his buddy.
While Dexter still has his need to kill he does make sure he protects his girlfriend (Julie Benz) and her son and daughter family. In one episode there's a child molester who takes an interest in the daughter and Dexter deals with him in a permanent way. Dexter's sister, Debra, is still clueless of her brother's activities. She develops a relationship with a guy who is her polar opposite.
Miguel is frustrated about the justice system and wants to take the law into his own hands. He proposes that Dexter get him access to a white supremacist who is being held in a temporary cell, who they'll deal with. Dexter ends up doing the deed but Miguel wants to do the next kill. In fact, he starts doing his own killings. This is all very dangerous to Dexter because there is one too many persons who know about his extra curricular activities. So he plans to get rid of Miguel, the one person he thought may be his first true friend.
The season ends with Dexter getting married to his pregnant girlfriend Rita (Julie Benz), which I'm sure will present a whole new batch of problems for Season 4.
