It's almost two months after Dexter Morgan killed the "Ice Truck Killer", who was his brother, and he hasn't killed anyone in all that time. Sergeant Doakes is suspicious of him and follows him around after hours, even to his bowling league games. His girlfriend Rita (Julie Benz) believes he has a drug addiction problem and he goes with it, using it as a cover, as he is addicted....to killing. But at one of the drug recover meetings he meets unconventional artist Lila, who quickly becomes his sponsor and eventually his girlfriend. She's probably more crazy than he is.
The police also discover his "dumping ground" in a sea trench off the coast of Miami and dub him the "Bay Side Butcher". The FBI comes in, led by Special Agent Frank Lundy (Keith Carradine), whose speciality is catching serial killers. Dexter's sister is working with him and eventually those two develop a relationship
What's most different this second season is that he seems to actually experiencing emotions rather than just faking them, which is what he's always wanted, and it's an interesting growth to the character. Also, there's a lot more sex---and sex wasn't something he was particularly interested in last season, as he sublimated those feelings through his killing. I'm not sure why the writers decided to to this except as a way of introducing character Lila (Jaime Murray of BOTCHED and DEATHS OF IAN STONE), who puts Dexter's secret identity in jeopardy.
I didn't enjoy this as much as the first season but it's still a damn good show.
