The Doctor finds himself on Mars. There, he finds the first base established by humans. They have unwittingly freed an entity that lives in the Martian ice and it begins to possess the crew members, one by one. Unfortunately, according to history, this is the day that they all die in a mysterious accident and this accident is responsible for mankind further exploring the universe. It is the granddaughter of Adelaide Brooks (Lindsay Duncan of ROME) who is at the forefront of space travel and her motivation for doing so was to continue her grandma's legacy. If her grandmother never dies then there's a chance humanity will remain earthbound.
The Doctor (David Tennant) knows that he must let them all perish, as they are supposed to, but decides to act differently. He says "screw it" to preserving the time-line, which ultimately has to do with all of his recent losses the past year. He figures he's the last surviving Time Lord and can do whatever the heck he wants. But even though he's thinking he may be changing things, these things, much to his dismay, remain the same and realizes that while he has a lot of power he's also powerless.
This is a good horror story, a bit like Carpenter's PRINCE OF DARKNESS with the whole water theme.
