This 70's classick has always been just a fun movie to watch. Anything pertaining to an insane asylum will hold my attention and this film really lets the inmates run the asylum. A sexy nurse begins her new job at said mental hospital under some scary circumstances as the former Dr. has been murdered via an axe. Slowly, this strange, sometimes funny cast of misfit loonies works on the young ladies mind, making her own sanity questionable. There are secrets here she doesn't know and when she finally realizes what's truly happened it's too late. Low budget, this film still shines thanks to the cast and the story. The assortment of wackos always keeps me watching just to see what they will do next. The tone and way the movie was filmed helps give it that gritty, saddening feel. You feel sorry for the poor woman's plight, but know the whole time something's brewing just below the surface. S.F. Browning's direction makes this whole thing work and raises it above its low budget roots. If you like weird movies full of strange characters, Don't Go in the Basement is for you. It's getting harder to track this film down now, so good luck at seeing this minor 70's horror hit.
