It's pretty much a given that any big-budget Hollywood movie based upon a video game is going to suck and DOOM unspectacularly meets those expectations. After there's some type of attack on a Martian science lab, a group of Marines (led by "The Rock") is sent it to contain the mess. What they come across is a synthetic Martian chromosome which mutates humans into these huge, ALIEN-looking monsters (why is it that the aliens always have to look like ALIENS?). There's also a subplot involving one of the Marines, John Grimm (Karl Urban of THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK, LORD OF THE RINGS) and his estranged twin sister. A big point is made about this taking place on Mars-but the sequences on Earth and the sequences that take place on the Red Planet are almost identical, so you really don't care a hoot that it takes place on another planet. The only thing that surprised me was that "The Rock" was cast as "the bad guy", which actually worked (then again, he was a villain in THE MUMMY RETURNS).
