This is an odd Japanese end of the world movie. A group of students are riding the subway, when suddenly the electricity goes out and it crashes. One boy wakes up to see that everyone else has been killed in the crash. Everyone, that is, except for a young girl and another male student. The girl is slightly injured and the other student is clearly insane, as he wishes to kill them.
As the two survivors travel across a Japan buried in feet of gray ash, we find out that volcanoes have exploded all over the world, not only killing millions but causing a shift in the magnetic field of the Earth, which has driven people insane. Everyone has a desire to kill. They must flee people who at first they believe are saviors-and in one creepy scene many of the survivors basically become walking zombies. The special effects are top-notch, particularly with the exploding volcanoes and the chunks of rock flying through the air. My only complaint is that it seems a little long and is at times a bit too preachy.
