From what I had been hearing, "Dust Devil" was a "brilliant" independent "masterpiece" and etc, etc. After finally sitting down to it, I must say, it's a hugely overrated and insipid supernatural film from director Richard Stanley of the post-apocalyptic flick "Hardware".
After her husband gives her 'five-across-the-eyes', a timid woman hits the road on a trip across the desert. Along the way she picks up a hitch-hiker who turns out to be some sort of nomadic entity who prays on those who feel that their lives are not worth living. There's a South African cop who is investigating the mysterious stranger's string of grisly murders that seem to involve ritualistic forms of black magic and voodoo...
Overall, I couldn't make heads-or-tails of what the hell is so sensational about "Dust Devil". It is shot considerably well, but, as it stands, that was really the only positive aspect I could discern . The acting was ineffectual, the storyline was muddled and clambering, and the ending was abrupt and disappointing. It all very unfortunate since "Dust Devil" had the conceptualized components of a satisfactory premise and technical "flair" that was slick enough, but the way in which the film was constructed seemed vastly confused and incomplete. Everything from certain character's backgrounds to motive of the antagonist never seemed adequately represented.
