This early Tobe Hooper film is one of his best, unrelenting in its nastiness. It starts off with a girl leaving her short stint at a whorehouse who then walks to a nearby run-down hotel. The owner realizes where she came from-and kills her. He's crazy. He also has a huge pet crocodile in the swamp outside his place, where he dumps the bodies. The fake crocodile prop isn't the most convincing but that's okay. The movie more than makes up for it. The movie happens all in one night, as we see people checking in to the motel but not checking out. He kills two guys, both fathers, with this wicked-looking scythe-and then tries killing the women. A little girl, fearing for her life, hides in the crawlspace beneath the house, though this connects to the area where the crocodile is. In the end he ends up getting eaten by his reptilian pet.
