First Look Home Entertainment's new three film serial killer box set has just hit store shelves and it features some great entertainment, Ed Gein is the best of the set in my opinion. The serial killer that was before the phrase had even been coined has always made for a great story and that tradition more than continues here. While this flick isn't quite as good as the classick Deranged, it does take a deeper look into the Gein story and at the mental, family, and sexual problems that created the Wisconsin cannibal. The acting in this one is very well done and the story and slightly sleazy touches here and there kept me hooked like that poor storekeeper hanging in the cellar. Of course, all the wonderful touches you heard of concerning Ed are here. The drawer full of noses, jars filled with eyes, and heads hanging around all light up the set here by film's end. You see Ed's 'suit' made of a woman's skin, complete with hair, big, floppy tits, and a big bush. Hey, Ed was slicing 'em up long before shaving pubes was cool, so don't get to testy. See a teenage Ed get caught shakin' his snake in the tub by mom with his favorite detective magazine, then get his ass whooped with a belt. The mental illness that played a part in Ed's famous acts is shown here, as is the strange relationship he had with his mother. You really get a great look at the man and his strange world in this movie. Makes you wonder how many more lonely, mentally disturbed Ed Geins are out there. All three movies in this set are cool, this one is the best of the bunch though.
