This is one of those gooey, mutant monster movies from the 80's (like THE KINDRED), with a weird idea and a great cast of character actors, from Ray Wise (TWIN PEAKS) to Ely Pouget (DARK SHADOWS revival) and R. Lee Ermey (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE remake).
The premise is that an experimental sub has gone missing, so another sub, led by Ermey and Jack Scalia (who is the sub's inventor) go with a crew to investigate. They find an underwater cavern that has evidence of being some type of secret lab, but along with it are all these strange mutations. There's a giant contraption that is breeding these creatures, "speeding up evolution". So they not only have to get out alive but destroy the entire area before these new life forms get to the surface and take over the planet.
This movie is also known as THE RIFT.
