"Faceless" is one of Jess Franco's best horror films in which he submits to a more polished, albeit 'stylish' quality along with a fair amount of sleaze and gore. It's basically a French remake of one of Franco's earliest films, "The Awful Dr. Orloff" from 1962...
A doctor is accosted by a patient while out shopping with his girlfriend and sister. Apparently, some reconstructive surgery went amiss for the disgruntled woman, who exacts her revenge by tossing acid at him - but missing, and disfiguring his dear sis. Now, the doc wants to repair her scarred features by kidnapping models and performing a facial transplant. He calls upon the expertise of a brilliant Nazi surgeon and they begin attempting the experimental surgery, while one of the captive girls' father (Telly "Kojak" Savalas) hires a P.I. to track her down.
As I'm sure I've mentioned before - I am no scholar when it comes to Franco's films, but from what I have seen of his work, I tend to prefer his more 'sexploit' type of material while some of his more 'traditional' horror stuff might fall a little short, in my opinion. I will say, however, that "Faceless" is quite an entertaining flick with a slight bit of nudity, plenty of gore effects (including an eyeball puncture and chainsaw decapitation), and a snappy 80s theme song peppered in, throughout. If you're interested in a more "higher profile" Franco horror joint with a decent amount of splatter, you won't be disappointed here.
