Despite the "sensational" nature of this recent made-for-television movie (and probably making Americans more afraid of everything than they already are), it's a decent flick, sort of like THE STAND without the supernatural elements. In China, the bird flu strain mutates and becomes communicable with people. An American business guy brings the flu back and unwittingly infects dozens of other people. Joely Richardson (EVENT HORIZON), who works for the Center for Disease Control, warns the authorities that things will get pretty bad, particularly since the virus has a 40% fatality. The story follows several groups of people-the Governor of Virginia, the wife and kids of the first flu victim, and a nurse and her husband, who learn to cope with the disaster. As with a lot of these recent disaster movies (CATEGORY 8, 10.5, et cetera), the movie is open-ended, so I'm sure there will be a sequel soon.
