Brian DePalma's newest is surprisingly entertaining movie, which has a plot device he previously used in BODY DOUBLE. It's an erotic crime thriller with a time-travel twist. The main story revolves around a woman thief (Rebecca Romjin Stamos of X-MEN) who steals over a million dollars in diamonds from her associates in France. They find her-and she has to make a run for it. She's chased and falls over the balcony of a building, only to be saved by an old couple who believe her to be their daughter. She wakes up in their apartment and sees their family pictures. Through a strange twist of fate she's the doppelganger of their daughter, who had just lost her husband and child in an accident. When the old couple leaves the real daughter comes home and shoots herself in the head. The woman takes her identity and the plane ticket she bought to America. On the plane she meets a rich man and they hit it off. The movie then skips to seven years later. It turns out she had married that man and he's returned to France as the U.S. Ambassador. A photographer (Antonio Banderas) takes her picture for a cheesy newspaper and her face is plastered all over the city. Her old associates recognize her, find out where she is and she has to make another run for it. She ends up involving the photographer in her scheme, who is in for a wild ride. Things don't end very well. But then something totally unexpected happens. At a certain point in the film she's able to undo some of her mistakes and change the future of herself and the people she's encountered. She can more or less redeem herself and make things right.I liked the movie because of this totally weird turn of events-and it actually works well this time DePalma uses it.
